Welcome to our lovely self-catering, pet friendly, English holiday cottage, in the heart of the historic Chilham village, near the Cathedral City of Canterbury, Kent

The history

A blacksmith then a private home. The Smithy and the adjacent Tudor Cottage were once one large stone house!

The original house listed as ‘Kennett House’ was a stone building. Towards the end of the 1800’s it was changed into a Tudor style building. In the 1960’s the house was divided into two cottages.

We bought both cottages in 2003. The Tudor cottage was our main residence until we moved to Australia  in 2008. The Smithy has been rented as a self catering cottage since 2004.

The Smithy & Tudor Cottage Frontage to Chilham Square

The Smithy is a charming Grade II Listed cottage in immaculate condition. Situated in the Square of the picturesque village of Chilham; a Tudor square surrounded by 15C timber framed houses, with views of Chilham Castle.

Chilham is on the North Downs National Trail and ancient Pilgrim's Way to Canterbury in a designated "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty".

Walking distance to the beautiful, peaceful countryside: the Kent Downs, woodland, lakes and orchards. Excellent walks from the cottage to Kings Wood (1,500 acres) where King Henry VIII hunted deer and to Godmersham Park (visited by Jane Austin). Numerous other walks nearby in the Stour Valley and Crundale Downs.

In the village there are two pubs, a train station (short walk away and with direct trains to London, Ashford, Canterbury and Ramsgate), bus stop (services to Canterbury and Ashford), and a Post Office. Groceries, fruit and vegetables can be purchased from nearby farm shops. Plenty of parking spaces in the nearby free car park (3 min. walk).  The Cathedral city of Canterbury is 6mls. Easy access to many of Kent's attractions, its gardens, castles, coast, nature reserves and historic old towns e.g. Sissinghurst Gardens, Leeds and Dover Castles, Chatham historical dockyard, Whitstable, Faversham, Sandwich, Romney Marsh, Walmer, and Rye.
